New Cross-border Project: Stories

The National Museum of Photography and its project partners will gather STORIES from the former Czech-Austrian border region

The National Museum of Photogtraphy, together with its partners – the Waldviertel Academy in Waidhofen an der Thaya (www.waldviertelakademie.at)  and the Museum of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (www.muzeumcb.cz), have launched a joint cross-border project from the European Territorial Cooperation Programme ´Ziel 3´  between the Czech Republic and Austria 2007-2009.

The project is co-financed by the EU from The European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE). It is officially titled ´Stories´ and its start on the 1st June 2009 is an immediate continuation of the nearly two years long phase of preparations involving all three partners.

´Stories´ is a project based on a historical photographic approach and it maps thematically the joint history of Czechs and Austrians living in the border regions between South Bohemia and North Waldviertel from the post-WW2 period until 1989. The task lying ahead for the National Museum of Photography as the leading partner of the project, and of the photographers who will participate, is to create an up-to-date pictorial documentation from the examined areas. The photographs provide a ´coulisse´ for the historical research undertaken by the other two institutions. The aim is to concentrate on individual ´stories´ of residents and their memories, their life stories – hence the title ´Stories´.

As part of this project, two public seminars and one small travelling exhibition will take place, along with the publishing of a catalogue and a richly illustrated book. They will be the mediators of the research and photographic outcome for the public. There will also be a second exhibition of ´Stories´ on view towards the end of the whole project at the National Museum of Photography in Jindřichův Hradec then in Waidhofen a.d.Thaya and finally in the City of Vienna.

The project will continue until the 31st May 2012.
